Is a root canal going to be painful?

No, when the procedure is performed correctly by a trained dental professional, a root canalshould never be painful. 

In fact, you’ll be given an anesthetic, or in some cases, sedation dentistry may be available (ASK US)

Both of which means that you shouldn’t feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure. 

At most, our patients report that the worst part is the initial injection to administer the anesthetic. But within seconds, the anesthetic will be taking effect, and the area will become completely numb. 

What exactly happens during a root canal?  

When tooth decay, known as a cavity, gets bad enough, the infection will begin to penetrate into the soft, inner pulp of the tooth. 

As this infection progresses, bacteria can begin to eat away at the tooth root, and the surrounding structures, which can lead to a severe infection, known as an abscess. 

Untreated, tooth infection can lead to severe illness, and in some cases, the infection can become fatal. 

A root canal procedure is performed to remedy this infection, and to save the infected tooth.

This is done by drilling into and then removing the root of the tooth, as well as any damage, inflamed, or infected tissue. 

Once this has been done, the hole is then filled with a hard, composite dental material, and the surface of the tooth is finally bonded and polish so it will look like a completely natural tooth.
