What’s the difference between a bridge and a crown?

Dental procedures to fix or replace damaged or missing may not be the most pleasant of experiences, but most often, they are necessary.

One commonly asked question from our patients is about the differences between dental bridges and crowns.

Both bridges and crowns are fixed to your teeth and made from ceramics and other dental material.

However, both have very different functions, which we’ll explain in just a moment.

What is a Bridge?

A dental bridge is used to fill a gap between two teeth existing, typically where one or several teeth are missing.

The teeth on either side are used to connect the bridge and to hold it securely in place.

Essentially, a bridge is a prosthetic tooth or teeth permanently installed to fill gaps, making your smile appear as normal as can be.

What is a Crown?

Unlike a bridge, a crown is placed over top of an existing tooth that has experienced severe decay or damage.

If a tooth has been badly damaged by decay, broken, chipped or cracked, then a cap will be placed over the tooth to make it appear as normal, and to prevent further decay and damage to the tooth.

The cap placed on top of the tooth is called a crown, and it will act as a regular tooth, with no need to take any extra care of it once it’s fitted other than regular brushing and flossing.

Do I need a crown or a bridge?

If you’re unsure what kind of treatment you need, make sure to visit your dentist for an examination, so that they can help you make the best decision for your specific situation.

Depending on how damaged your existing teeth are, patients may sometimes need to have teeth pulled and replaced with a bridge. Or, a crown might be the better option, depending on the advice of your dentist.
